A library classification is a system of organizing and categorizing books and other library materials to help users find the necessary items. Library classification systems are based on the principles of organization, standardization, and accessibility.
There are several different library classification systems in use today. Still, the two most widely used systems are the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system and the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system.
The DDC system was developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876 and is used in most public libraries in the United States. It organizes books and other materials into ten broad categories, each with 100 subcategories. The categories are:

- 100 Philosophy & psychology
- 200 Religion
- 300 Social sciences
- 400 Language
- 500 Science
- 600 Technology
- 700 Arts & recreation
- 800 Literature
- 900 History & geography
The LCC system was developed by the Library of Congress and is used primarily in academic libraries. It organizes materials into 21 major categories, each with numerous subcategories. The categories are:

- C — AUXILIARY SCIENCES OF HISTORY

- F — HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS
- G — GEOGRAPHY. ANTHROPOLOGY. RECREATION
- H — SOCIAL SCIENCES
- J — POLITICAL SCIENCE
- K — LAW
- L — EDUCATION
- M — MUSIC AND BOOKS ON MUSIC
- N — FINE ARTS
- P — LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
- Q — SCIENCE
- R — MEDICINE
- S — AGRICULTURE
- T — TECHNOLOGY
- U — MILITARY SCIENCE

Both the DDC and LCC systems use a combination of letters and numbers to designate specific subjects, making it easy for library users to locate materials on specific topics.
- Arrange books or other materials in a helpful sequence convenient to the readers, research workers, and librarians.
- Ensure speedy location and replacement of books on the shelves for next users.
- The users are provided with the subject approach to the subsidiary topic deal within a book by analyzing its content and making entries in the classified catalogue.
- Fugitive and ephemeral literature in vertical files etc. can be arranged with the help of classification.
- It is a useful device by which a new book can be inserted in its proper places, among the other books on the same subject.
- Provide means by which the help of classification may clearly and effectively guide the stock of books or other materials.
- It renders useful assistance in making up the collection for different entries or branches.
- Classification is used as the basis for recording issue books at the lending counter.
- Help in the compilation of bibliography, catalogues, book lists, etc.
